Discover how eco-tourism is evolving across Mediterranean cruise destinations
Mediterranean destinations continue to attract cruise visitors from around the world, but this success also brings pressure. Many port cities face seasonal peaks, crowded visitor hotspots and environmental challenges linked to concentrated tourism flows. The PortCREW project was created to respond to this challenge by supporting a smarter, more sustainable and more balanced model for cruise tourism across the Mediterranean.
The project focuses on a clear opportunity: helping cruise passengers discover less-known inland, natural and cultural sites, rather than concentrating visits only in the most popular urban areas. This approach is designed to reduce pressure on crowded port-city centres while giving greater visibility to local communities, SMEs and eco-tourism experiences beyond the usual routes.
At the centre of the project is the PortCREW platform, an innovative transnational tool designed to improve eco-information exchange between stakeholders, provide dynamic tourism information at cruise terminals, and support the creation of sustainable eco-tourism packages for independent cruise passengers.
PortCREW is being tested across five Mediterranean pilot areas: Valencia in Spain, Toulon in France, Koper in Slovenia, Ravenna in Italy and Thessaloniki in Greece. Each destination brings a different tourism context, but they share the same goal: finding practical ways to manage cruise peaks, support more sustainable mobility, and promote local eco-tourism assets that can enrich the visitor experience while reducing pressure on the most visited areas.
The project is also aligned with wider European sustainability goals. Its objectives include reducing pressure on small and medium-sized Mediterranean cities, valorising inland natural and cultural assets, improving the social acceptability of cruise tourism, and integrating sustainable measures into local tourism, transport and planning strategies.
By combining stakeholder insights, international sustainability standards and geolocation-based analysis of visitor movements, PortCREW aims to move eco-tourism from concept to practical action. Its ambition is not only to promote greener experiences, but to help destinations make better decisions about how cruise tourism is managed on the ground.
